چکیده

Keratinolytic abilities of Bacillus polymyxa B20 and B. cereus B5esz were evaluated in liquid cultures in mineral media containing chicken feathers. Both tested strains were capable of effective liquefying and biodegradation of feather keratin, up to 56.5 – 72.1% in ten-day cultures, releasing considerable amounts of hydrolysis products. Tested bacteria were mesophilic species, producing highest activity of keratinases and proteases in the presence of keratin (1%) as a sole nutrient source or keratin supplemented with yeast extract, at 30oC. Keratinases of B. polymyxa were predominantly highly alkaline serine proteases, with optimum activity at 50oC, while B. cereus produced mainly a mixture of neutral proteases, optimally active at 45oC. Keratinolytic potential of tested bacterial strains could find a variety of applications, including utilization of keratinous waste from poultry industry and obtaining keratin hydrolysate-based soil fertilizers.

Biodegradation of Hard Keratins by Two Bacillus Strains

BACKGROUND Extensive quantities of keratinic by-products are disposed annually by animal-processing industry, causing a mounting ecological problem due to extreme resilience of these materials to enzymatic breakdown. There is a growing trend to apply cheap and environment-friendly methods to recycle keratinic wastes. Soil bacteria of profound keratinolytic potential, especially spore-forming ro...

International Journal of Pharma and Bio Sciences PRODUCTION OF KERATINOLYTIC ENZYME BY A NEWLY ISOLATED FEATHER DEGRADING BACILLUS SP. FROM CHICK FEATHER WASTE

A novel feather-degrading Bacillus Sp. was isolated from chick manure. The bacterium produces keratinolytic enzyme using chicken feather as a sole of carbon and nitrogen source. The effect of temperature, pH on keratinase production of this keratinolytic strain was studied. Maximum enzyme activities were obtained within 48 hrs (780U/ml) of cultivation. The optimal conditions for the keratinolyt...

Keratin Production by Decomposing Feather Waste Using Some Local Bacillus spp. Isolated from Poultry Soil

Background; Feather waste is generated in large amounts as a by-product of commercial poultry processing. The main component of feather is keratin. The main purpose of this study was to identify Bacillus spp. (the keratinolytic bacteria) that are able to degrade the feather for producing keratin. Methods; Bacillus spp. Were isolated from the waste of poultries located in Miyaneh city. The bact...

Isolation, identification and characterization of feather degrading bacteria

The present study deals with isolation, identification and characterization of feather degrading bacterium. The keratinolytic bacteria were isolated from feather dumped soil. The colonies showed higher keratinase production was identified as Bacillius sp, as per Bergey’s manual method. Keratinase producing Bacillus sp, showed higher enzymes production. The crude filtrate showed specific activit...

Feather degradation by strains of Bacillus isolated from decomposing feathers

Feather waste is generated in large amounts as a by-product of commercial poultry processing. This residue is almost pure keratin, which is not easily degradable by common proteolytic enzymes. Eight strains of Bacillus, isolated from decomposing feathers were tested for the hydrolysis of feather wastes in the laboratory. Among these strains, Bacillus cereus KB043 was the best feather degrading ...
